3 Books on My Bookshelf I Think You Should Read

Many times when people come over they compliment me on my decor (which I absolutely love!). The truth is, all my home decorating can be credited to Pinterest, Google, and the various home furnishing catalogs that come in the mail. I'm not so good with a blank canvas or going with my gut on design decisions. But, I'm really good at identifying what I like, and then copying the look as best I can.

A couple of months ago I bought a new bookcase. After the delivery guys set it up in the living room, I took a look at its emptiness and immediately turned to Pinterest. I started searching things like: “how to style a bookcase”, “bookcase decorating ideas”, etc. It's a work in progress, but so far I’m happy with it! I’m constantly shuffling things around and switching stuff out with other miscellaneous pieces around my house (I’m not sure that will ever stop). It has enough knick-knacks and prints, but it's lacking books. Ironic, right?

I’ve never been in the habit of buying books. Over the years I’ve gotten by with just my public library card and borrowing books from friends and family. With that said, I’m slowly starting to grow my collection.

In my last blog post I talked about how most of the books on my bookshelf read “lost” (more about that here). I thought I’d elaborate on that and share a few good reads with you today:

Scary Close

I talked up this book so much that Shay, his mom, and his dad all ended up reading it… and then we had a little book club gathering to go over it. "Scary Close" is about being yourself and being vulnerable. It explains how to have healthy, meaningful relationships with yourself, your spouse, your family, and your friends. We read it over 6 months ago and still reference it. It’s one of those books where you sit and think “How does he know that about me?”.

You Are a Badass

The whole time I was reading this book, it felt like the author was my hilarious best friend telling me to get my sh*t together. She was so relatable and convincing! If you’re on the fence about making a big jump in your life, read this book. She’ll help turn your “I can’t...” into “Heck yea, I can!”. She explains how we're all one-of-a-kind (but not in a cheesy way), and how positive energy and surrounding yourself with positive people will dramatically affect your life.

Lean In

I was in denial for a long time that women are few and far between when it comes to leadership in the business world. After reading this book I started taking note of how I’m often outnumbered by men. It’s not uncommon for me to be in a conference room full of people and be the only woman in the room. Whether you’re male or female, this book will open your eyes to the challenges women face in the working world.

I’m currently reading “Every Good Endeavor”, and up next I’ll be digging into “Show Your Work!”. What have you had your nose in lately?
