Mad Decor
I just recently caught up on the previous seasons of 'Mad Men'. I’ve had quite the love/hate relationship with Don Draper, but the one thing I continue to enjoy about the show is the fun, retro style in both the home and office decor. With season 5 premiering on Sunday, March 25th, I wanted to share some of my favorite 1960’s decorating trends. Bar Carts Why hide the liquor in a cabinet? Show off that bad drinking habit by displaying your liquor, wine, and necessary bar tools on a cart in the living room.
Decanters This was a very popular trend in the 50's and 60's. My grandparents had crystal decanters that were gorgeous, but almost too beautiful for the average home. These glass decanters from Pottery Barn would be great for day-to-day use.
Record Players Who doesn't love the sound of vinyl? You can get great albums at garage sales, flee markets, or used record shops for unbelievably low prices. If a record player was willed down to you, consider yourself lucky. It's true what they say... they don't make 'em like they used to.
Rotary Dial Phones I know most people don't even have land-lines anymore, but I think a dial phone like this would look great in an office (even if it wasn't plugged in).
Boxy Furniture This long, boxy sofa is exactly what I picture when I think of furniture from the 60's. Their couches were simple in shape, low to the ground, and supportive for good posture.
Typewriters It's hard to imagine businesses using typewriters for all of their correspondence... with no backspace! I think using a typewriter to send letters to friends and family would make snail mail much more exciting.
I have quite a few vintage pieces in my home that have been passed down in the family. So remember, hang on to those family heirlooms - you never know when styles will recirculate!
Who else is excited for the premier of 'Mad Men'? Are there any other decorating trends I could have highlighted?
